Third-year Economics and International Relations STUdent Kate Haché is wrapping up a semester abroad at Örebro University after four months of learning, exploration, and personal growth.

She’s long dreamed of studying abroad and said the experience has been everything she hoped for—and more.

“It has been so rewarding to add an international component to my studies and see the differences between North America, Europe, and the Nordic countries in response to contemporary global issues,” said Haché from Miramichi, NB.

Haché has been taking sociology courses that complement her studies in International Relations and said the exchange helped her reassess her plans for her final year at STU and for graduate school.

“I was able to learn about new career paths and try new methods of learning, which will help if I decide to pursue post-graduate studies outside of Canada.”

One of the most memorable experiences for Haché in Sweden was seeing the northern lights.

“I’ve wanted to see the northern lights for a long time—and I haven’t had the chance in Canada,” she said.

“Here, I’ve seen them four or five times with friends. We all ran into a nearby nature reserve to glimpse the green sky.”

Haché has also embraced unique aspects of Swedish student life.

“I’ve loved all the traditions here,” she said.

“Students here wear different coloured overalls based on their program and collect patches from campus events. Mine are blue for exchange students—I think I have six or seven patches now.”
