Emma Craib, BA’25, is prepared to take on her master's degree in history with an SSHRC Canada Graduate Scholarship to fund her studies—something she credits to the incredible support she received from her professors at STU.

"Dr. Karen Robert, my first History professor, spotted my potential from day one, and it was her encouragement and that of the entire History department that I was able to pursue further education," said Craib, who is originally from Woodstock, NB.

"As a first-generation student, I had no idea how to even consider education past a Bachelor of Arts. STU allowed me to follow my passions, which led to my research field at the master's level."

For the History and Political Science Honours graduate, one of the most important aspects of her Bachelor of Arts at STU was the ability to form personal relationships with professors, which helped her feel more comfortable entering academia.

"I would not be the student I am today without the support I received from both the History and Political Science departments, and I could never have gotten the SSHRC award without them," she said.

Following a successful research assistantship with Dr. Julia Torrie (History), focusing on food history and Nazi occupied Europe, Craib received the SSHRC Canada Graduate Scholarship to fund her studies in the Master of Arts in History program at Brock University.

"Receiving my SSHRC award has been an honour. It's a recognition of the incredible amount of work I put into my undergraduate studies, and that people believe in my future," said Craib.

"I am forever grateful for all the wonderful opportunities STU and the faculty have granted me."

At Brock, Craib's research will focus on Jewish Historical Commissions in post-war Europe and how attempts to document the Holocaust aided in the development of a Jewish (trans) national identity.
