STUdent Ayla Davidson Reflects on Meaningful Exchange in Türkiye 

Fourth-year STUdent Ayla Davidson has been broadening her worldview, deepening her understanding, and building new connections through her international exchange at Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Türkiye. 

 

“An international exchange is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” said Davidson. 

 

“Studying in Ankara has allowed me to understand global issues from a different perspective, which will enrich how I approach similar topics at STU.” 

 

The Sociology and Human Rights STUdent, originally from Fredericton, knew she wanted to participate in an international exchange to broaden her academic perspective by taking courses that approached familiar topics in new ways. 

 

“The academic experience has allowed me to expand my understanding of Sociology through a global lens. My courses are providing different perspectives and cultural insights,” said Davidson. 

 

Experiencing a different culture and building life-long connections 

 

One of the most meaningful parts of her international exchange is how it helped her grow in ways that go beyond academics. 

 

“I was excited to partake in an international exchange and meet new people and experience a different culture firsthand—from traditions, language, and daily life in Türkiye,” she said. 

 

Through her exchange, Davidson has had the opportunity to immerse herself fully in the experience and travel throughout Türkiye to Istanbul, Cappadocia, Bodrum, Pamukkale, Ephesus, Kuşadası, and Köyceğiz.  

 

 Davidson received a scholarship to fund her exchange and travel costs through Erasmus+—the European Union's program for education, training, youth, and sport, which provides funding for studying or undertaking a traineeship abroad—and has the opportunity to attend events and trips with other students through the Erasmus Student Network. 

 

“One of the best parts of this experience has been connecting with other students. These friendships have made the exchange so meaningful.”
