Mental Health Coordinator Brittany Sprague Recognized for Enthusiasm and Passion for Student Services
Brittany Sprague, STU’s Mental Health Coordinator, has been recognized for her enthusiasm and passion for delivering outstanding student services.
She was honoured with the Carol’s Creed Award, which recognizes a student services professional who has shown “infectious enthusiasm” for their profession. The award was announced at a recent conference hosted by the Atlantic Association of College and University Student Services.
“I am honoured to receive the Carol's Creed Award, especially because I was nominated by my colleagues,” she said. “I admire my colleagues, so it is touching to be recognized by them. It is a reminder that I am blessed to be part of a team where we support and celebrate each other.”
Brittany was described by one of her nominators as a “ray of sunshine” on campus. Another one of her nominators described her as “a beacon of positivity, supporting students, staff, faculty, and partner organizations.”
“I love being part of the St. Thomas University community. Our students are caring and passionate and it is inspiring to be around them. Also, because STU is small, I have the freedom to try new ideas and implement feedback and suggestions from students which keeps the work new and interesting.”
Brittany has incorporated many programs and services to promote students’ mental well-being, including walk-in/one-at-a-time counselling sessions. She has also introduced anxiety groups, art-based self-care sessions, and monthly therapy dog visits on campus.
“Student Services are important to a positive student experience because we support students' needs beyond their academic needs. We recognize that in order to excel academically, students' other needs must be met. This can include basic needs, such as finding access to affordable food, as well as supporting students' health, career development, and academic success.”
