Dr. Matthew Hayes will speak on "Transnational Mobility and the Global Real Estate City" as part of the STU Public Lecture Series.
Since the 1980s, there has been a tremendous increase in the numbers of people moving across borders for leisure purposes. New technologies and cheaper air transportation have created new relations between social and physical space, which geographers and sociologists are now trying to understand. This talk will address how transnational mobility and the financialization of real estate are producing new urban processes which open the city to some global social classes, while closing it off to many others. What does this extension of urban commodification mean for the future of cities, the urban experience, and the politics of social rights to the city?
St. Thomas University’s 2024-25 Public Lecture Series is designed to enable STU faculty researchers to be able to present ideas and research results to a wide and diverse audience on issues of broad public interest.
