Prof. Josephine Savarese (with Chevelle Malcolm) on “Unsettling Colonialism in the Justice System”

Professor Josephine Savarese will speak on “Unsettling Colonialism in the Canadian Justice System” as part of the STU Public Lecture Series.
In 1990, Neil Stonechild, an indigenous teenager, was found frozen to death on the outskirts of Saskatoon, after he was abandoned there by the Saskatoon police as part of their “starlight tours.” This presentation examines two differing responses to the death of Neil Stonechild: the judicial inquiry and David Garneau's gestural painting, Evidence, as a way to assess the inquiry process, from the Stonechild Inquiry to the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. The presentation draws from the edited collection Unsettling Colonialism (2023) and will include the reading of a poem by Fredericton based poet Chevelle Malcolm along with highlighting writing by persons who have experienced incarceration.
St. Thomas University’s 2024-25 Public Lecture Series is designed to enable STU faculty researchers to be able to present ideas and research results to a wide and diverse audience on issues of broad public interest.
