Smart Start Team
Study better. Together.
Do you remember when studying was a social activity? When you could drop your books at a table and find a friend ready to talk through an idea or an assignment? At STU, we believe that sense of connection and the habit of showing up for each other are key to academic success.
The Smart Start Team is here to bring back the spirit of the campus study table, making academic support more visible, social, and accessible for everyone. Led by trained, high-achieving peer mentors, this program is designed to help you build the sustainable learning strategies and confidence you need for long-term success.
What are Smart Start Study Tables?
The Smart Start Study Table is a dedicated, peer-led study session held on the Main floor of Sir James Dunn Hall. It is an informal, collaborative space where you can work alongside your peers, get support, and build good study habits.
Think of it as having a go-to study table again — but better. There's no sign-up and no stress, just a chance to be around other students who are also trying to stay on track.
What can I get help with at a Smart Start Study Table?
Our Smart Start Team members are trained to provide coaching and support to help you develop core academic skills and manage your workload. They can assist with:
- Building Sustainable Study Habits: Develop effective learning behaviours that go beyond a single course.
- Time Management: Create a plan for completing homework and long-term assignments.
- Breaking Down Large Tasks: Get help initiating papers and making large assignments more manageable.
- Navigating University Resources: Learn research tips and get connected with other helpful services like the Writing Centre or subject-specific tutors.
You can also use this time as dedicated homework or study time. A team member can check in with you to help you stay focused and make progress.
Will there still be subject-specific support?
Yes. While the Smart Start Team focuses on building community and academic skills, we remain committed to offering small group tutoring in specific subject areas. This support is available on demand throughout the semester.
