Student Employment
Many students want to attend university but are unsure of how they will pay all the costs associated with furthering their education. It is a common misconception that student loans or scholarships are the only way to get funding. Working is also an excellent way to not only generate income but also gain skills and make meaningful connections.
Below are some ideas to get you started with your employment journey as a student.
- Visit the job boards on Learning in Action to browse student employment opportunities both on and off-campus.
- Apply for an internship with a local employer through STU’s Internships Program.
- Apply for a job through one of our on-campus employment programs.
- JOBS (Job Opportunities Benefiting Students) - open to all students beginning in August.
- STUworks International – open to first and second year international students beginning in August.
- Research companies you are interested in and see if they have any opportunities available.
- Meet with STU’s Career Development Advisor for job search strategies.
Other ways to get income:
- Sell your talent. Do you do crafts, like to make art, have a knack for photography, sing or play an instrument? Start getting creative and showcase your talent. There are lots of local markets, fairs, and cafés where you could potentially make money.
- Open an online store or sell your finds through online marketplaces. You might create something to sell on a site like Etsy or go thrifting and sell special items through Facebook marketplace, Kijiji, or Ebay.
- Use your skills. Offer tutoring, computer or musical instrument lessons, editing/writing services, or teach an online class such as language lessons.
- Offer support to people in your community. Run errands for the elderly, mow lawns and shovel driveways, offer childcare services, or help with dog walking.
