Research
I'm a social scientist. While at the National Research Council of Canada, I was vice chair of the research ethics board for eight years. Since 1997, I have supervised and taught research skills to dozens of students and worked with many community partners across Canada, Ireland and other European Union countries. Together we have produced hundreds of reports, papers and conference presentations and more than 50 peer-reviewed publications. My research associations include Society of Socialist Studies, Canadian Communication Association, Environmental Studies Association of Canada, Canadian Sociological Association, and the Climate Social Science Network.
My current research interest is energy technologies – primarily nuclear energy – and how they are framed in the media. My work is highlighting and critiquing the institutional dynamics of the political conflict over climate change and the so-called "energy transition." In addition to publications, I bring my research expertise to the Energy and Society course I teach in the STU Sustainability and Environmental Studies program.
