Biography

Michelle Lafrance was born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, but has called the Maritimes “home” for most of her life. She received her BSc from St. Francis Xavier University, her MA from York University, and her PhD from the University of New Brunswick.  Trained as a clinical psychologist, she worked in practice in a variety of settings before joining the STU faculty in 2003.  Her research and teaching interests are rooted in critical and feminist approaches, exploring the social construction of distress and wellbeing.  She regularly teaches courses related to ‘clinical psychology’ but does so through a critical lens that acknowledges the social and political determinants of distress and health.  When not at work, she and her partner can be found on their organic farm, homesteading, paddling, or walking in the woods with their dog Ellie.
