“An Incredibly Rewarding Experience” — Madison Seymour, MSW’25

Madison Seymour, BA’22, MSW'25, wanted to pursue a career that would challenge systemic inequities and create a more inclusive society—values that she found reflected in the field of social work.

Following the completion of her Bachelor of Arts, it was the structural approach of the Master of Social Work program that brought her back to STU.

"During my BA, I came to appreciate STU's supportive community, smaller class sizes, and focus on diverse learning experiences. My positive experience with STU and the MSW program's emphasis on advocacy and working for broader social change made it the right fit for me as I continued my education," she said.

"My time in the Master of Social Work program has been nothing short of a meaningful and valuable experience. I have valued the emphasis on critical reflection and the opportunity to learn alongside supportive and passionate people."

For Seymour, one of the most rewarding aspects of the MSW program was having the opportunity to apply what she learned in practice in two unique field placements.

Her first placement was with STU Social Work professor Dr. Jenni Cammaert, where she worked alongside an interdisciplinary team on initiatives that addressed systemic gaps in the province, including advocacy efforts for the lack of eating disorder treatment and initiatives focused on the wellness of first responders in Indigenous communities. Her second placement was with Just Us Inc., a local non-profit offering free and low-cost counselling.

"These placements equipped me with a holistic view of social work from policy advocacy to individual healing—I've strengthened my confidence, sharpened my skills, and solidified my commitment to supporting individuals and communities navigating complex barriers," she said.

"The MSW program has helped me expand my knowledge while also encouraging personal and professional growth. The experience has been incredibly rewarding."
