Black Voices Matter: A Poetry Night 

Black Voices Matter: A Poetry Night featuring Ian Keteku, El Jones, and Temilo Osunbunmi, Thursday, February 7, at 7:00 pm in the Noël Kinsella Auditorium. This event is free and open to the public.

 

Ian Keteku

Ian Keteku is a poet, multi-media artist and educator.  Keteku is also the 2010 World Poetry Slam Champion and is committed to using words as both an interpretation and cure for the human condition. He conducts poetry, writing and performance workshops for students of all ages, inspiring people to accept the power of their own voice.

El Jones

El Jones is a poet, educator, journalist and advocate. She was the fifth Poet Laureate of Halifax, and cur-rently holds the 15th Nancy’s Chair in Women’s Studies at Mount Saint Vincent University. Jones is a co-founder of the Black Power Hour, a radio show developed collectively with prisoners. Her advocacy and work fights anti-Black racism in Canada, walking in the path of her great-grandmothers who resisted relentlessly.

Temilo Osunbunmi

As an aspiring actress and comedian, Temilo is not afraid to say what we are all thinking, and if we aren’t thinking it, she’s not afraid to provoke a thought or two. Temilo is a Nigerian-Canadian, an intersectional feminist, who brings the element of duality into her work. She is a multidimensional artist who has expressed in capacities as: creative director, model, painter, organizer and writer. Temilo is an incarnation of art itself. Her presence, passion, experiences, and desire to express will leave you yearning for more.  

Documentary Screening of Long Road to Justice: The Viola Desmond Story 

Documenatry Screening of Long Road to Justice: The Viola Desmond Story on Thursday, February 28 at 6:00 pm in Brian Mulroney Hall room 101.

The evening will include a screening of the documentary and a short presentation from a representative from the Bank of Canada on Viola Desmond's new $10 bill, which was introduced in 2018 to celebrate her life and impact.

Large-Scale Poster Display

Large-scale posters will be on display to commemorate Black History Month in James Dunn Hall. The display was made possible in partnership with the STU Students’ Union.
