Dr. Tom Bateman on Political Executives and the Problem of Emergency
7:00PM
BMH 101
Dr. Tom Bateman will deliver the lecture "’It’s an Emergency!’ Political Executives and the Problem of Emergency Powers" as part of the STU Public Lecture Series.
Liberal democracies have access to the use of emergency powers. The invocation of Canada’s Emergencies Act in 2022 is a recent instance. Whether and to what extent can citizen rights can be limited or disregarded in exceptional circumstances? Emergencies are oddly attractive to governments and they will surely be tempted to declare them more frequently in our increasingly fraught political circumstances.
St. Thomas University’s 2024-25 Public Lecture Series is designed to enable STU faculty researchers to be able to present ideas and research results to a wide and diverse audience on issues of broad public interest.
