Bachelor of Social Work FAQ
Will the 15-month post-degree Bachelor of Social Work still be offered?
The last intake for the post-degree Bachelor of Social Work program was in September 2020.
Moving forward, the Bachelor of Social Work will be offered as a four-year undergraduate program (two years of liberal arts and two years of social work).
Students will complete two years in the Bachelor of Arts program and will then be able to apply to the Bachelor of Social Work program. If accepted, they will complete their final two years in social work and graduate with a Bachelor of Social Work instead of a Bachelor of Arts.
I already graduated from STU. Can I apply to the new Bachelor of Social Work program?
Yes.
I am currently enrolled at another university. Am I able to apply to the new Bachelor of or Social Work program?
Yes.
I have completed more than the required 60 credit hours. How will my GPA be calculated?
If you have completed more than the required 60 credit hours, your cumulative GPA will be calculated on the total number of credit hours you have completed.
How does the application process to the new BSW work?
Please see the Bachelor of Social Work Admission page for the step-by-step process of applying to the BSW and information on prerequisites, practicums, equity admissions, admission criteria, and application procedures. The BSW is a competitive program with limited enrolment and applying does not guarantee admission. The weighted admission criteria includes GPA, SCWK 2013 and 2023 grades (or interview), personal statement, related experience, and references. The application deadline is April 30.
Based on credit hours, I am eligible to apply; however, I haven’t taken the required Social Work courses for admission. Can I still apply?
Yes. Applicants who do not offer the required Social Work courses will participate in an interview process weighted at 30% (replacing the weight given to the grades of two required courses). Please see admission requirements — STU Bachelor of Social Work Admission Requirements.
If I’m not admitted to the undergraduate Bachelor of Social Work, am I still able to complete my Bachelor of Arts (if I’m in good standing at STU)?
Yes.
Can I earn two degrees and still complete my major/minor/honours in Arts while pursuing the undergraduate Bachelor of Social Work?
No. Accepted applicants will leave the Bachelor of Arts program to begin the Bachelor of Social Work program. You will graduate with a Bachelor of Social Work degree.
