Emily Williams: Letter to a Future STUdent
DEAR FUTURE STUDENT,
My name is Emily Williams, and I am a proud alumna of STU, Class of 2019, graduating with a major in Criminology and Criminal Justice and Human Rights.
At STU, I was a member of Moot Court and the Model UN team and completed the Certificate in Experiential Learning and Community Engagement.
During my time at STU:
- I received an excellent liberal arts education
- I found my passion
- I forged a career path
- I made lifelong friends
I greatly value my liberal arts education because it equipped me with the skills to succeed, teaching me:
- effective communication
- comprehensive research and writing skills
- teamwork
After receiving my Bachelor of Arts at St. Thomas, I completed my master’s in International Human Rights Law at the Irish Centre for Human Rights, University of Galway. I am now based in Dublin as the Policing and Justice Policy Officer at the Irish Council for Civil Liberties.
The subject matter I learned in my Human Rights and Criminology classes is relevant to my daily work, but the broader skills I learned from other courses in Political Science, Philosophy and Spanish allowed me to develop employable skills that I have been able to use in every job.
I hope you’ll consider St. Thomas for your post-secondary studies — it is a tight-knit community full of opportunities.
Wishing you the best of luck,
Emily Williams
